This page provides an alphabetical list of the areas on campus which provide assistance to faculty who are incorporating technology into their teaching and research. The header of each entry is a link to a page which contains more detail about the support area.  If your favorite area is not included in this list, please contact the wiki editors.

 


 

Academic Computing

The group within OIT dedicated to helping faculty incorporate technology into their teaching and research. Academic Computing maintains the OIT Computer Classrooms as well as supports faculty through workshops, special consultations, and one-one-one support through the Instructional Media Lab.

Academic Instructional Media Services (AIMS)

AIMS provides video services (from duplication to broadcast-quality video production)  as well as support for classroom use of media (equipment delivery, support for auditorium equipment, and training for the AV Classrooms.)

Center for Educational Software Development (CESD)

CESD created and continues to support the OWL online homework system. They can also provide software development support for additions to OWL and other educational software projects.

Center for Teaching (CFT)

The Center for Teaching (CFT), partners with faculty and graduate student instructors, to improve teaching at the University. One of CFT's roles is assistance for those who wish to use instructional technology (IT) in their teaching. Instructional technology assistance is not CFTs primary focus, but CFT instructional consultants embed IT into most programs we offer the UMass community. Computer Classrooms - OIT

The Computer Classrooms group within OIT's Academic Computing maintains computer classrooms across campus that can be scheduled for semester-long or short term sessions when a class needs each student to access a computer. Outside of class time, these computer classrooms are available for students to use.

General Education Fellows Program

This special program (currently in its first year) seeks to help reinvigorate General Education classes by helping a select group of faculty fellows to redesign their GenEd courses, often with a boost from instructional technology.

 

Instructional Media Lab – Academic Computing

The Instructional Media Lab is a place on campus where faculty can go to get one-on-one help with nearly any teaching technology. Faculty can get help via e-mail (instruct@oit.umass.edu) phone (545-2823) or by making an appointment to come to A212 Lederle Graduate Research Center Lowrise (LGRC).

Libraries

 The libraries at UMass Amherst offer a wide range of services specifically geared toward helping faculty use the library in their teaching and research. Of special note in this context and the increasing number of technological tools that help faculty and their students locate and use resources provided by the library from anywhere on the Web.

Office of Faculty Development

The Office of Faculty Development (OFD) supports faculty in their roles as scholars, teachers, and members of the University and wider community.

Office of Information Technologies (OIT)

OIT provides centralized computing and telephone services to the University. Although much of its work occurs behind the scenes some areas of OIT, such as the Help Desk and Academic Computing, work directly with faculty.

OIT Help Desk

The OIT Help Desk provides a full range of computing assistance for OIT services and supported software via our Web site, call center, and walk-in services.  Faculty, staff and students who need help can refer to online documentation on the OIT site, fill out an online help request form, call the Help Desk at 545-9400,  or stop by A109 GRC.

Guidelines for adding entries to this page:

 

The list is alphabetical. The header should be a link to a page about the support area where details and discussions can be posted. The blurb after the header should be short (like a glossary entry) and contain the following:  a brief description of the support area, specific ways in which this area supports faculty or teaching, and  how it fits within the larger campus community (for instance,  the which larger office sponsors the service). This can be followed by a URL that links to the Web site for the support area or a page which describes the servies that the group provides specifically to faculty.
